Is Internet privacy dead?

(Source: Google.com, 2009)

The Internet is defined as the most powerful and efficient tools in the communication world. It enables people to keep on touch and communicate with each other in any part of the world. The innovations of the Internet are making it faster and reliable especially when we search for information. For example like Google. We can an unlimited amount of useful and reliable information with sources on almost all kind of topics we want on the Internet. Besides that, we can get any services we want on the Internet such as online banking, job vacancy, buying movie tickets and making hotel reservations. Therefore, we do not have to go all the way to the place to get our things done. Students and young adults are the categories who have the highest percentage of surfing the Internet. Nowadays, almost everything is computerised. In colleges and universities, all the students have an ID to excess to their student portal to check the latest updates from their lecturers.
However, as technology becomes more advance, information can be access and shared. "Anything you put on the Internet will be grabbed, indexed, catalogued, and out of your control before you know it”. (Rambam, 2008). According to Rambam, all types of information especially private and confidential documents in the Internet can be copied or scanned. Then they are being sold to the company’s competitors, agencies and anyone who can pay.
Moreover, some teens are addicted to the Internet. They use the Internet for the wrong purpose. Facebook is the best example as it has one of the highest numbers of users and fastest growing social networking website on the Internet. They have the ability to reconnect us with our friends and keep in touch with the people we know. Due to this, people will spend most of their time on the website stalking on other people’s profile, commenting on their pictures and walls which can affect one’s personal or working life if too much time is spent on Facebook that makes them cannot concentrate on studies or work. Sometimes, it is dangerous as we may be exposed to harassment and identity fraud when we include personal information on our profile without setting a private profile. There are many cases that teens and young adults get sexually harassed and cheated when they share too much information on Facebook.
Bradley (2010) states that social networking sites like Facebook exist to share information. Therefore, it is essential for us to be aware that privacy is not dead and it is vital for users to concern about the issue regarding privacy in mind as technology may help and also harm us as well.

The Blogging Revolution

Nowadays, almost everyone knows what blog is and the numbers of bloggers are increasing from time to time. According to Werbach (2001), he states that people frequently updated news, headlines, diary entries and recommended links that are chronologically organised in their websites. Besides that, he also mentions that weblogs enable people to interact and share opinions with each other.
In this article entitle “The Blogging Revolution” that I have chosen and read, it reviews on how people gain freedom in speech and expression by expressing what they feel in blogs to share their thoughts and ideas about country issues. Apart from that, this article also talks about how the blogging phenomena affect countries like China, Iran, Egypt, Syria, Cuba and Saudi Arabia. In some countries like Iran, the usage of the Internet was once before open to all. However, the government has made a decision to filter the Internet and block all free circulations ever since they became aware that their country system may be hacked as stated by Jadi (2009). “Iran applies one of the world’s strictest filtering policies, which have been tightened even more since June 2009”. ( Rahal, 2010).
According to Etling (2009), the government is being unreasonable because they restricted the usage of Internet among all its citizens as they want to control the freedom of speech in their countries. They do not want their citizens to reveal any issues about Iran to other countries. As a reason to fight against terrorism In Egypt, Facebook has been placed under surveillance. Moreover, many websites such as Google, Yahoo and Microsoft were in the filtering process in China whereas in Syria, the government targets censorship on social networks and blog platforms. Saudi Arabia on the other hand is still one of the most forbidding countries that has 38% of Internet penetration rate.
The government of these countries can do anything to filter the Internet but in the end, people’s freedom will eventually speak out despite all the restrictions taken. Blogging is just a place for people to express their ideas and opinion about certain issues. Different authors shares different thoughts of blogging due to different cultures and perceptions. Nevertheless, there will still be pros and cons of weblogs as some people might cause offense to the others especially when they touch about sensitive issues like politics.

(Source: Google.com, 2009)

According to Whatls.com (2000), an E-book is an electronic version of print book that can be read digitally using a computer, laptop screen or e-book readers. Majority of the people still prefer to print out the pages of an e-book to read. Due to this, PDF files are always the best format for this purpose. Both of them have the same function which enables people to read. There are many comments saying that E-book is going to replace paper books as both of them have similar formats. However, both e-books and paper books have their advantages and disadvantages.

The Advantages of E-books

-Contain special feature is its back-lit screen which makes enable people to read in the dark.
-Environmental friendly as we do not need to chop down trees to produce papers for books.
- Has built-in dictionaries, and font sizes and styles that can be altered.
-E-book reader hand-held device are light and can store to over half a million pages of text and graphics.
- More efficient as it is easier to find words in an e-book and this can eventually save time and effort on searching.

The Disadvantages of E-books

-Strain eyes and affect health due to a long usage of E-book.
-The price is costly compared to paper books.
-It is troublesome as the devices are not lasting and we have to charge it from time to time.
-It is fragile and has a short life span. Therefore, it is not reliable.

The Advantages of Paper Books

-Paper books are available everywhere in bookstores.
-Paper books do not cause any effect on our health unlike e-books which can make our eyes to be strain due to exertion.
-We can read paper books anytime and anywhere we want as they do not need power source to function unlike e-books. Therefore, we can save costs and preserve electricity.
- Paper books are more affordable compared to e-books.
-Paper books have no life span.

The Disadvantages of Paper Books

- Paper books are not user friendly and it is hard to erase the unwanted words when we make notes in it.
-Paper books are very heavy when we need carry more than one book.
-Waste a lot of time searching for information.
-Paper books are not environmental friendly as many trees have to be chopped down to produce every book.
-Paper books cannot be read in dark place.

Therefore, the bottom line is the preference between e-books and paper books are depends on the readers themselves. If one enjoy reading book more than once and likes to collect them as collections, they would still prefer paper books as the books have sentimental value to them. If one read the book only once and have to search for a lot of information for their academic and business purposes, then an E-book might be better as it is more efficient and save time.

Reflections

(Source: Google.com, 2010)

During the whole process of blogging regarding the subject, Issues of Publication and Design, I have learned many important and interesting things such as designing a good document in respect to my blog readers and lecturers. Besides that, I have gained quite a number of theories and perspectives during my research in order to implement it in my documents. As I blog, I have learned to be aware of sensitive issues that might offend some readers. We have to be considerate when producing a document and understand what the readers want. As a good document designer, it is a must to respect people of different races, religions and cultures. It is important to know that not everyone shares the same opinions so therefore, I hardly mention facts about what I think about some particular topic when creating an argumentative topic in my blog. As a professional blogger, learning how audience read and interpret the images and text are essential.
